Fibres

Image analysis based on SEM images is the perfect tool to check the homogeneity, compactness and average diameter of fibers. Thermo Phenom microscopes use the Fibermetric software application for fully automatic measurement of fiber dimensions. Among other things, it is used for production control of oriented nanofibers. This orientation in turn influences the filtration properties and thus directly affects the efficiency of, for example, face masks.

Other applications can be found in the glass fiber industry for optical applications or polymer reinforcement purposes.

Another important application is the determination of asbestos fibers. Asbestos is known to be hazardous to human health, and accurate analysis of its presence in the air on construction sites or in renovation projects is critical. An asbestos analysis can be performed using SEM imaging in which the operator looks for asbestos fibers himself. Once a suspected presence is established, the fiber can then be further characterized with element analysis hardware and software (EDX).

For high-throughput analysis laboratories, an automated Asbestometric analyzer is available. It searches for asbestos fibers on the available filters, after which the operator starts screening the possible candidates with the EDX element analysis software.
